Lib Dem policy still set by sandal wearers

Government policy is to dish out money we haven't got to foreign governments for projects such as building wind turbines in Africa and greener cattle farming in Colombia.

Money spent on "tackling climate change" abroad is set to rise to £969 million in 2015.

This is money spent in an effort to slow down the rise in carbon dioxide emissions, which are implausibly claimed to be responsible for all this global warming we're experiencing.

The sandal wearers love it. Last year Ed Davey struck a deal meaning Britain will contribute £1.8 billion of “climate aid” before March 2015 – the equivalent of £70 per household.

So how will we know if this "climate aid" has met whatever its objectives are? We won't, of course. It's futile gesture politics with money we haven't got. So it's Lib Dem policy - naturally - but it's also a bonkers Cameron obsession.

Why should I vote for a party with such an extravagant, smug, misguided leader?

The Lib Dems have always been a party of unconnected obsessions, often with little connection to reality. GM food is grown widely in the world and widely eaten. Yet the best Clegg can do on GM's is to call for a cautious, science-led approach. That's unsubtle code for Please don't mention this way to grow more food more cheaply on less land and so make many people's lives better.

In this, as in other ways, the EU is behind the US. We are trailing reality for timorous political convenience.
