The Catalan regional assembly has approved a declaration proclaiming the Catalan people a “sovereign political and legal entity.”
An independence referendum would be illegal without agreement by Madrid - which doesn't seem likely to be forthcoming.
Support for independence seems deeper in Catalonia than it is in Scotland. Catalonia is also economically stronger than the rest of the country, unlike Scotland. But Catalans want to stay in the EU, and Spain might veto membership for an independent Catalonia.
This struggle is still in its early stages.
