The problems of Valencia

Paul Mason in From Our Own Correspondent (from 7.11) on the problems of Spain's third largest city, Valencia. They're far from unique.

The city has seen corruption and huge vanity projects. Now that its government's tax revenues from property have plummeted, it can't pay its bills - the local government owes Valencia's pharmacies €500m. So they have no money to buy supplies.

This brings a society very close to the edge. But Mason veers off to talk about the feebleness of the local media, denying us his view of the bigger picture.

Still, worth a listen if you also ignore his clunky introduction.
