How is Newsnight special?

We switched Newsnight on last night to see Douglas Carswell.

Carswell himself was okay, but we were then treated to a "discussion" between Dan Hannan and Ming, who trotted out the tired old clich├ęs about Europe ensuring peace after the second world war, and Europe being our biggest market.

These "arguments" really are way past their sell-by date.

Dan and Ming were allowed a few seconds each time to make their points in the format of a standard BBC discussion, this one mediated by Mrs McShoutie, who brought nothing special to the proceedings at all.

Is Newsnight special? Not on this evidence.
